Switchbot

My journey with Switchbot began with a video on Youtube and the fact that I had no way to unlock my van remotely.  My Ram Promaster van box truck didn't come with an electronic key fob to remotely lock and unlock my doors.  As a former delivery truck, it was not designed to have one.  So, I came up with my own idea!  The locks are electric and there is a button.  I just needed a way to push the button remotely.  Enter the Switchbot bot.  It's a little box with a mechanical arm that pokes out and pushes the button you want to push.  I can now lock and unlock my van using my phone!

That little foray into automation led me down a road where I explored other ways to automate other functions in my van and home.  For example, I have an air conditioner in my van that uses a remote.  I also have a roof fan that uses a remote.  What if there was a way to turn my somewhat "dumb" air conditioner and fan into smart devices?  Enter the Switchbot Hub mini and the Switchbot Hub 2!  I now have a device that connects my devices to the internet and has an IR blaster that you can "train" using your remotes so that you can now control your devices from anywhere!

Last, I added a couple of Switchbot Meters (thermometer and hydrometer) to my setup.  Now I can leverage the automation feature in a way that makes my "dumb" devices even smarter!  I can set up scenes such as when the temperature is higher than 70° F, turn on the AC....once it drops below 66° F, turn it off.  I have similar scenes for my fan where the fan turns on or off as well as increases or decreases speed according to the temperature shown on the Switchbot. Meters.
